Walking Club

Since 2014, we have hosted the FMC Walking Club in Westside Long Beach every Saturday morning. Local residents and their families are welcome to walk, exercise, and meet their neighbors in a safe and health-promoting environment. Every month includes special guests who provide training on dealing with blood pressure, diabetes, stress, practicing healthier habits, and cooking nutritious food.

In late 2017, the FMC Walking Club began talking with their fellow West Long Beach residents who were concerned about an incomplete sidewalk on the west end of Hudson Park. Due to the unpaved sidewalk, children, senior citizens, and families had were at risk of getting hit by passing cars as they both had to use that path.

In 2018, the Walking Club gathered over 150 petition signatures calling for a safe sidewalk to be built and presented them to District 7 Councilmember, Roberto Uranga. In 2019, the Walking Club renewed its call to finish paving the sidewalk and gathered hundreds of signed postcards and support letters from residents and local groups. In June 2019, Councilmember Uranga and the Long Beach Parks & Recreation Department agreed to fully fund and build a safe sidewalk in 2020. Thank you to Councilmember Uranga and to all the West Long Beach residents and supporters who backed this community-led campaign!

Congratulations to the FMC Walking Club for proving that when Community members unite, they can change the community for the better!
